African stories are diverse and will be better appreciated when told from different perspectives. Solomon Onita Jr. told a wonderful immigrant story titled “Tazmanian Devils”. The story caught the attention of American rapper, Bryan “Birdman” Williams of Cash Money. Consequently, Birdman partnered with Benny Boom of Groundwurk Studios to produce the movie. Reacting to the partnership, Birdman said,
“I am honored to work with Benny. We share a great history in the music business over the past 20 years. Benny and I have discussed making films together and this project presented us with the perfect opportunity to produce a great movie.”
Before Tazmanian Devil, Birdman and Benny have a working relationship that dates back to the early 2000s. They have been partners in creating blazing music videos for artists like Big Tymers, Juvenile, and Birdman & Lil Wayne. However, their recent projects include Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Jacques. There is no official release date yet for the movie. However, information from reliable sources shows that the movie is in post-production.
Tazmanian Devil boasts of a long list of reputable actors. This includes Adepero Oduye (When They See Us), Abraham Attah (Beast Of No Nation), Kwesi Boakye (Claws), and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Chi). The movie is written and directed by Onita Jr. However, Cash Money Films and Groundwurk Studios will be providing funding for the project. Speaking about his business relationship with Birdman, Boom said,
“I have been creating visuals for Cash Money artists for decades, and I am excited about this next phase of our collaboration. Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams has supported me since my first years directing, and this joint venture [Tazmanian Devil] is a natural business and creative transition – the first of many.”
Tazmanian Devil’s storyline
Tazmanian Devil follows the story of a 19-year-old immigrant (Attah), Dayo. After immigrating to America, Dayo struggles to bond with his estranged father. Dayo’s father abandoned his family to become a missionary. Subsequently, Dayo joins a college fraternity which locks him in a moral battle with his father. Birdman’s elder brother and co-founder of Cash Money Records, Ronald ‘Slim’ Williams said,
“It’s exciting to join forces with Benny to tell a unique story on the big screen. We’ve built a platform to succeed together and open the door for some very exciting projects in the future as well. It all begins with Tazmanian Devil”.
