Look back to two decades ago, African music rarely made it outside the continent. However, that story has changed. African musicians are the rave of the moment. For example, Jerusalema by Master KG has inspired viral videos from all over the globe. However, the biggest win at the moment is the featuring of Burna Boy’s song ‘Destiny’ on the United States inaugural playlist. Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, the Nigerian superstar is popular with the stage name Burna Boy.

The Inaugural Playlist

“We know that music has the power to bring people together, and after a year of national challenges and division, we hope this collection serves as an indication of a new beginning, positive change, and a reminder that music of all types is a common language.”

These were the words of Benoni Tagoe, President of The Raedio who insisted that the company was grateful for the opportunity to create the inaugural playlist.

The playlist was put together by The Raedio in partnership with Dj D-nice. It has a beautiful curation of 46 songs by several exceptional artists from all across the globe. Other international artists whose songs featured were Tame Impala, Kygo, and Dua Lipa. Others include American artists like Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. Billboard, Spotify, and a number of other services have the playlist available for streaming.

Burna Boy is a 30-year-old artist born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The “African Giant” has constantly shown an undying fear to speak against political and social vices especially through his songs. Obviously, his rise to fame is not a fluke, rather, a testament that hard work pays.

The artist is garnering some more local and international accolades, thanks to a song on his fourth studio album, African Giant. This album was released on 26th July 2019, by Spaceship Entertainment, Atlantic Records, and Warner Music. He did not fail to impress his fans and colleagues.

Before “Destiny” featured on the inauguration playlist, Burna Boy’s African Giant album had significant wins. First, it won Album of the Year at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards. The following year, it was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Burna Boy’s unique Afrobeat infusion and versatility are, perhaps, the features that stand him out from the crowd.

His fifth studio album “Twice as Tall” is following the same success trend. It is not surprising that he has lots of international collaborations including the recent collaboration with Sia. The animated video will steal your admiration. See the video below.
